[Update: Here’s the trailer detailing the new downloadable content.]

In an interesting twist, the upcoming 3DS title New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have additional coin rush stages made available via DLC, to be sold sometime after launch. Nintendo is already trying to dodge criticism by stating that these DLC stages will be created after the game has been released, and that they will be taking user input into account when designing them. They’re also showing off celebrities playing the game, which is cool if you like celebrities.

I’m not sure that it’s a coincidence that New Super Mario Bros. 2 if themed after the rapid acquisition of massive quantities of gold, as that seems to be exactly what Nintendo was thinking when they were developing the game. Even though I enjoyed my time with the game at E3, I can’t help but feel that it is a blatant cash grab with minimal new ideas, thrust out on the market less than a year after the last Mario title hit the 3DS in a desperate attempt to score Nintendo as much cash in as little time as possible.

I’m still totally buying it though because Gold Lakitu.
