Following news of an imminent 3DS price cut, sales of brand new systems understandably halved in Japan, with consumers waiting for the cheap alternative. Conversely, the sales of used systems have since doubled.
Secondhand retailers immediately started to slash their prices by around ¥4,000 following Nintendo’s announcement, which has drawn quite a few customers. It’s also believed that many consumers are willing to buy used in order to qualify for the “3DS Ambassador” program, which will net them ten “free” NES games and ten “free” Game Boy Advance games.
In North America, you won’t need a used system to qualify for the freebies. Just head to Walmart on August 9, where they’re selling discounted consoles early.
