Rumor: 3DS to use the hated Friend Code system

Recommended Videos

A Famitsu preview of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition seems to suggest that the despised Nintendo Friend Code system — Nintendo’s way of pretending to keep children safe online — might be making an unwelcome return with the 3DS.

According to the Japanese magazine, players can battle random online opponents with a custom match feature, or they can maintain a friends list using Friend Codes. The preview itself doesn’t explain whether the codes are just part of the game, or part of a universal system spread across all 3DS titles.

Whichever it is, it’ll hardly be surprising. Friend Codes are likely here to stay, no matter how inconvenient they may be for us. Nintendo will always be the “family friendly” company, and has to do what it can to maintain a child-safe image. The rest of us will have to just grin and bear it.
