Mod your dream Geralt when The Witcher 3 REDkit launches later this month

Fans are hoping for some large scale fan-made expansions.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has today confirmed the official release date for The Witcher 3 REDkit. This is the official modding program built on the tools used to create the game in the first place, and they’re coming to fans almost a decade later.

CD Projekt confirms The Witcher 3 REDkit tools are fully launching on May 21, per its Steam news post, meaning we’re mere weeks away from fans being able to access what could be the best modding tool for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is exciting, because it means mod authors and players who want to make anything from a quality-of-life improvement to an entire quest for the game can now do so using a program specifically designed for working within The Witcher 3.

Following a recent playtest, CD Projekt Red is unleashing this modding tool on the world. The official announcement post on Steam doesn’t give this news much fanfare, but it does confirm that anyone who owns the game can get it for free.

I don’t have any technical experience in making games, outside of silly text-based simulators for your browser. But looking through the images on the Steam page forThe Witcher 3 REDkit, it looks like a lot of the items from the back-end of the game are explained to users, or at least have explainer text attached to them to make the process of modding much less overwhelming.

Fans on Reddit are pretty excited about the news that this tool is finally getting into player’s hands. User ToothlessFTW excitedly explained, “I’m hopeful that something cool can come of this, but it’s also pretty late. The game is almost ten years old, I can’t imagine there’s going to be a lot of expansion-sized mods like CDPR clearly want out of this.” I have to say, a large-scale fan-made mod would be a dream to see for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt around its 10-year anniversary.

With the knowledge that the next Witcher (or Polaris, as it’s currently called) is being worked on, there’s every reason for fans to continue exploring the series’ past titles. The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings each now have a recommended set of mods for players who want to start them today, and I imagine The Witcher 3 REDkit will spark even more creativity in the Witcher 3 mod scene.
