Keiji Inafune’s King of Pirates coming to 3DS in 2012!

Former Capcom production chief Keiji Inafune has shown his hand with a trailer for King of Pirates, his brand new 3DS game. It’s due to be published by Marvelous AQL, known best for bringing us the Harvest Moon series.

The game is planned to be the first of a trilogy, and will include a multiplayer component. The above trailer shows off no gameplay, but does seem to heavily indicate that it’s based on the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the same book that Dynasty Warriors, Kessen and a whole host of other games pilfer from.

There’s a difference between King of Pirates and those games, however — KOP is using some of the most adorable cartoon animals in existence to convey the story. Ancient Chinese soldiers are replaced with penguins, frogs, cats, lions and cobras.

That sounds exactly like the kind of thing I dig. Can’t wait to see more.
