Its first ten ever
The games industry was saddened yesterday to hear of the closing of GameTrailers, a media staple for the past 13 years. People like to say “it’s the end of an era” anytime anything popular ends, but the phrase actually feels apt in this instance. GameTrailers’ business model revolved around creating original video content; that doesn’t sound noteworthy in 2016 but was an incredibly bold move in 2002. It trusted its foresight and intuition enough to pursue the video format despite technological limitations screaming that this isn’t the smart money.
In a heart-over-brain way, one of GameTrailers’ final acts was emblematic of the attitude that got the site started all those years ago. Before closing its doors for good, GameTrailers updated its Bloodborne review to a perfect ten. Originally, it was given a 9.6.
While significant enough in its own right, this update has some added oomph. Bloodborne now has the distinction of receiving the only ten GameTrailers has ever awarded. According to Metacritic, a handful of 9.8s is the highest the site had scored anything until now.
Whether Bloodborne should be the game to receive this distinction is a moot point (although it is very good). What matters is that GameTrailers went out as it came in — doing what it believed in and not really caring what convention would dictate. You’ll be missed, GameTrailers.
