World War II shooters, World War II SHOOTERS!

Is it just me, or does the idea of a first-person shooter set in World War II seem really fresh right about now? With the industry being so afraid to touch such a tired concept recently, it seems we’ve barely seen anybody touch the setting. Call of Duty: World At War is the last “AAA” release that I can remember.

We’ve definitely still had a few (Wolfenstein, Red Orchestra 2), but all the big games have steered well clear. Ironically, while the “WWII shooter” remains a stigma associated with unoriginality, the idea of a big budget WWII shooter seems kind of … unique.

I think we’ve all had enough of fighting morally grey Russians and “insurgents” as studios migrate to more modern settings (while remaining afraid to touch upon on any real-life modern threats). Nazis, though? I’m about ready to shoot some damn National Socialists in their nationally social faces again.

Of course, it would be nice to have some wars that have rarely ever or never been touched before! What kind of wars would you like to be desensitized to right about now?
