Ubisoft’s “always online” DRM for PC games has bred a considerable amount of ill will from consumers, and has gained plenty of negative publicity due to its heavy-handed implementation. However, piracy is apparently down, so Ubisoft’s pleased.
An Ubisoft representative told PC Gamer that the company saw “a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection, and from that point of view the requirement is a success.”
Ubisoft gained regained respect from PC gamers after it was seen to scale back its DRM measures, but recently reinstated them with authority in Driver: San Francisco. According to Ubisoft, there’s a clear advantage in using the DRM, so don’t expect to see it go away anytime soon, no matter how intense the vitriol. Which is lovely.
