Ubisoft reveals ‘Rocksmith’ game that uses real guitars

Given the reported state of music games, here’s a bit of a shock: Ubisoft has announced a new guitar game, Rocksmith.

The title isn’t a Guitar Hero knock-off, instead working with standard electric guitars via an adapter that works with the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Hollywood Reporter says the game will include tracks by David Bowie, Nirvana, the Rolling Stones, and the Animals.

Guitar Hero is a party game,” says Ubisoft senior vp of marketing Tony Key. “Rocksmith is an experience.”

Rocksmith is scheduled for a September release; Ubisoft is reportedly negotiating with guitar manufacturers like Gibson to release a $200 guitar/game bundle.

Last year, Harmonix released Rock Band 3, which featured Pro Guitar functionality that supports both a 102-button Fender Mustang controller as well as a real six-string Squier Stratocaster. The Squier controller was released last week; I’ll have a full hands-on/impressions going up later this week.
