Oogie Boogie is the master of chaos, deception, and tricks, so this mission isn’t an easy one to work through on your own. It’s an important one to check off for unlocking two special valley characters, though, so here’s a complete walkthrough for The Ghost in the Portrait quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

To complete The Ghost in the Portrait quest, a crucial step for unlocking Oogie Boogie and Zero, you need to figure out how to free Zero from the Haunted Portrait inside the spooky lair. As usual, Oogie Boogie is trying to find a way to trick you throughout this process, so figuring out a solution is tough. Here’s a full walkthrough for everything you need to get done in this mission.

Complete the A Halloween Invasion quest and The Oogie Boogie Contract quest

The Ghost in the Portrait quest is the third one of Oogie Boogie’s quest series, so before you can get started with it, you first need to fully progress through his previous tasks. This includes the A Halloween Invasion quest and The Oogie Boogie Contract quest. Once both tasks are done, visit any mailbox to accept the letter that starts The Ghost in the Portrait quest.

Inspect the Haunted Portrait near Oogie Boogie’s Lucky Wheel

To kick off this mission, head to Oogie Boogie’s lair through the Strange Mirror inside Scrooge McDuck’s shop. Walk up the stairs on the left side and turn left once you reach the top to find the Haunted Portrait located near Oogie Boogie’s Lucky Wheel. Interact with it to progress.

Check out the Memory Orb inside the Mirror Lair and give Oogie Boogie your Ticket

Pick up the Memory Orb that spawns nearby to unlock a special Memory. Then, walk over to Oogie Boogie in the lair and give him the most recent ticket you received in his questline.

Oogie Boogie will then agree to let you free Zero from the Haunted Portrait if you can land on the right spot when spinning his wheel, but this time around, you know he’s scheming up a way to rig the process, so you’ll need to seek some help.

Talk to Scrooge

Exit the Mirror Lair and track down Scrooge McDuck to see if he can help. You can find him in the shop as soon as you exit Oogie Boogie’s lair since the Strange Mirror is located there.

Place the Enchanted Gift Box

You’ve now got a special Enchanted Gift Box item to help you progress. Head back through the Strange Mirror and walk over to the staircase on the right side of the room. Locate the sparkling spot near the bottom of it to place the Enchanted Gift Box.

Use your Pickaxe on the Lucky Wheel

Run upstairs over to Ooge Boogie’s Lucky Wheel in the upper left corner of the room. Equip your Royal Pickaxe from the tool wheel and swing at the Lucky Wheel to progress.

Pick up the Lucky Wheel Cogs and Ghostly Paint Thinner

Hitting the Lucky Wheel causes some key items to drop nearby. Pick up five Lucky Wheel Cogs and one Ghostly Paint Thinner from the nearby area. Then, open your inventory and select the Ghostly Paint Thinner to apply it to your Royal Watering Can. Walk over to the Haunted Portrait, equip your Royal Watering Can, and use it on the picture to try and free Zero with the Ghostly Paint Thinner.

Speak to Oogie Boogie

Watering the Haunted Portrait didn’t go according to plan, so speak with Oogie Boogie to see what he did to sabotage the situation. Then, try to find and water the correct portrait. This won’t work out, though, so you’ll need to seek some additional assistance to progress.

Speak to Merlin

Exit the Strange Mirror world and track down Merlin around the valley. Chat with him to see if he has any idea how to help. Luckily, he does, and he tasks you with picking up a total of five Zero Essence scattered around the area.

Combine the Zero Essence at a crafting station

Once you’ve got the five required Zero Essence, head to any crafting station. Click on the Oogie Boogie quest icon and select the Zero Essence option to craft this key item.

Add the Real Ghostly Paint Thinner to your Watering Can

Open your inventory and click on the Real Ghostly Paint Thinner to apply it to your Royal Watering Can. The version of this special enchantment you had before wasn’t the real deal, but this time, it is, which means you’re ready to finally free Zero.

Water the correct Haunted Portrait

Head back inside the Strange Mirror and approach the Haunted Portrait. Equip your Royal Watering Can and use it on the picture to finally free Zero from captivity.

Speak to Oogie Boogie

Chat with Oogie Boogie to officially wrap up The Ghost in the Portrait quest. As soon as you do, Zero will officially be unlocked as a permanent Companion you can equip at any point. If you want to get Oogie Boogie too, though, there’s still more work to be done.
