I love me some Prince of Persia, old and new. So you can’t imagine how thrilled I am to find that the Jordan Mechner classic has hit the App Store for both iPhone and iPad. Best part? It’s only 99¢.

The game is called Prince of Persia Retro, and it’s designed for both iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone. What that means is that the game will scale automatically, and adjust the visuals and the on-screen control layout automatically.

At just under a buck, I immediately purchased the game for my iPad. Impressions/details after the jump.

Visually, it’s a crisp remake. Control-wise (which was my biggest concern), it’s actually not that bad — the game has “left” and “right” touch controls on the left side of the screen, and “up” and “down” controls on the right. Tapping anywhere on the screen is an “action” button; hold the screen and tap left or right to tip-toe.

However, it seems there’s no way to save your game or resume your last session, so once you exit out (or get a call on the iPhone, presumably) you’re back at the start. All of the game’s 12 levels are unlocked from the get-go, but that takes away any incentive to complete the levels to advance. (You’re not timed either, and there’s no leaderboards or anything like that.)

But again, should I mention it’s only 99¢? For a classic, even a port, I feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth.
