GTA 6 not arriving on PC at the same time it launches on consoles is one of the biggest bummers in PC gaming history, but things may not be as bad as you fear if former Rockstar North director Obbe Vermeij’s predictions are correct.
It might be too far down the line for many to remember, but nearly two years passed between GTA 5‘s release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (yes, those were its original platforms), and its PC release. As Vermeij explains, and given that the richer part of humanity has fallen in incomprehensible love with the nonsense machine—and it’s finally starting to bite them in the butt—we might just be getting that GTA 6 PC port earlier than expected.
While the tech oligarchy spent their first years of investment in LLMs blissfully ignoring genAI’s need to feed on human creativity to (one day, hopefully) thrive, the industry is now facing hackers who have turned the plagiarism machine against its makers. In less than two months, people have been using AI tools to reverse engineer games never before seen on PC to achieve what they claim are ports that not only run very well, but also look much better than they did on the systems they were meant to run on. The biggest example, right now, is Bloodborne.
Sadly, even though Bloodborne is one of the most acclaimed games of all time, it has only ever been played by a relatively small number of people. It never got ported to PC or remastered to at least run at 60 fps because Sony likely never believed it would be worth the investment, and the company won’t be too bothered to see it running so well on PC a decade after its release.
Modern gamers have gotten used to a completely frictionless experience with a launcher featuring lots of games ready to play. Regardless of how well AI “jailbroken” games look and how well they might play, they still require people to learn and engage with a bunch of tools complicated enough to filter out most of the people who might’ve felt tempted to give it a shot. If you’re braver than most, please note that you won’t really be helping in any sort of valuable game preservation effort by getting the Bloodborne “PC port”, as the AI reverse engineering produces code that runs, but that’s completely unreadable, and thus useless for any community interested in engaging with and understanding the inner workings of the game.
GTA 6 is a whole different beast, the most hyped game in the history of the Industry, a media juggernaut that will certainly have millions of voracious PC gamers immediately engage with whatever tools promise them a free and even better-looking version of the GTA 6 they gotta pay a lot for to play on a console. They’re already turning it into a nightmare via DLSS5, so I’m pretty sure someone will try to bring it to the PC as soon as they can, likely disregarding all of Rockstar’s artistic intent along the way.
Either way, this could result in hefty losses for Rockstar, so we’re waiting to see how the company will face this new issue.
GTA 6 releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
