Nintendo may alter its office requirement for eShop devs

Everyone should be allowed to work in their pajamas

As someone who works from home, Nintendo’s insistence that potential eShop game developers have dedicated office space has always rubbed me the wrong way. The quality of the individual title, not whether studios can pass another barrier to entry, should be what truly matters. Going off a tweet by Nintendo’s Dan Adelman, the company might be changing the policy going forward.

Asked if the office requirement was still true on Twitter, Adelman responded by saying “Ask me again in a couple of weeks. ;)” And you just know something is up when the emoticons come out.

Based on some of the praise given to the Wii U eShop, I’ve gotten the sense that Nintendo was finally able to take a good, hard look in the mirror with respect to its treatment of independent developers as well as its broader strategy for digital distribution. One can only hope that the audience is there on both 3DS and Wii U to embrace these types of games.
