Monster Hunter 4 gets Mario and Zelda themed extras

Mario cats = license to print money

Capcom’s Monster Hunter 4 is already getting rave reviews and is poised to be another hit entry in the series, but Capcom and Nintendo aren’t content to sit on their laurels and watch the game just sell millions. They’re working to maximize the game’s marketability with not one but two skins based on beloved Nintendo properties.

First there is the Mario and Luigi outfits for the Feylnes — Monster Hunter‘s race of adorable feline warriors. Super Mario 3D World features Mario and company dressed up like cats, so it seems fitting that Monster Hunter’s cats are returning the favor. Second is the Link outfit and weapon set for the player character, featuring the classic hero’s garb, sword, shield, bow, and even a boomerang that originated in Nintendo’s classic adventure franchise. Many say that Monster Hunter stays more true to the spirit of unpredictability, exploration, and unshackled discovery that once defined Zelda than the more recent games in the series, which makes this skin all the more fitting.

After Soulcalibur II sold best on the GameCube, I was moved to think that little Nintendo-themed extras would always help to sell a game. After Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition failed to move many units, I wasn’t so sure anymore. Do you think these Nintendo-styled extras will help Monster Hunter 4 to sell outside of Japan?
