If you want to get technical the 3DS is tops right now in Japan, but just barely. Nintendo’s 3D portable and Sony’s beloved PSP are really close as far as sales figures go. The 3DS only beats the PSP by a few hundred units.
The 3DS sales for the week ending March 27 were 50,710, and PSP sales were 50,479. I guess if you want to add in PSP go to the PSP sales, then Sony actually manages to beat the 3DS out with 51,079. Still, it’s barely winning by a nose no matter how you look at it.
The PSP buyers came out in droves for Square Enix’s new release, Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, which also sold rather well. The 3DS buyers came out in droves because…well, because it’s a new, shiny thing that they want. They certainly weren’t out for the launch title offerings.
It’s interesting to see that Japan’s lifetime total for 3DS sales is only 792,954. That’s quite a bit short of the projected 1.5 million they had predicted to move.
