How to beat the Shambling Mound in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

These new Honour Mode bosses are getting out of hand.

The Shambling Mound in the Shadow-Cursed Lands is among the more challenging encounters in Baldurā€™s Gate 3 Act 2, but there are other, easier ways of bringing it down than a head-on confrontation.

You first encounter the Shambling Mound while exploring the Ruined Battlefields south of Last Light Inn (X:46 Y:59). The Shambling Mound has a high HP that might take as many as three full turns to trim down, yet the biggest challenge usually isnā€™t the creature itself, but the mob that accompanies it and overwhelms the party.

Whatā€™s more, as of Patch 6, the Shambling Mound is a ā€œfully-fledged Honour Mode boss, with brand new bespoke Legendary Actions and tuned-up abilities,ā€ so if youā€™re playing or replaying the game in Honour mode, the vicious overgrown plant is going to put up even more of a fight. One of these Legendary Actions is ā€œWretched Growth,ā€ which causes 3d10 Necrotic damage and can end up one-shotting your companions if their hit points are low.Ā

You can bring a few tricks to bear on the Shambling Mound and the Needle Blights and Vine Blights helping him, so read ahead to find out what they are.

How to defeat the Shambling Mound in Baldurā€™s Gate 3

First off, note that finding the Shambling Mound requires passing a DC 30 Perception Check, and failing to do so will allow it to ambush your party. In a surprised state, the player character and their companions will be forced to skip one precious turn, allowing the Shambling Mound to close in and finish you off quickly. So, in case you fail the Perception Check, make sure to crouch and enter Stealth mode before approaching the steps leading up to the ruin.

Our recommendation is to have at least one wizard or warlock in your party (preferably Gale) with a couple of nasty AoE spells. Either Fireball (level 3) or Ice Storm (level 4) would do, though the Shambling Mound is particularly resistant to the latter. Still, using one of these AoE spells will give you a head-start on the enemy, not to mention that killing one of the Needle Blights will cause the rest of them to explode in quick succession due to a chain reaction.

Youā€™ll have to maintain your distance if you wish to turn the Needle Blightsā€™ power against the Shambling Mound. If they explode near your party, they could easily take out your vanguard Barbarian or Paladin. In fact, it might be best to take only your spell-casters to fight the Shambling Mound and use incantations like Misty Step to run away from the boss if it gets too close. When it does, he can easily take you out or entangle you in vines, especially in Honour Mode.

Another clever idea is to lure the Shambling Mound close to an edge and then use Shove to push it over. If the Athletics feat is successful, you kill the boss with one Action. From there, taking care of the Shambling Moundā€™s companions should be a breeze. If you wish to inflict some serious damage early on, combine Grease with Fireball, and that will probably take care of at least half of their collective HP.

Ultimately, and as is the case with any Baldur’s Gate 3 encounter, there are literally dozens and dozens of creative ways you could go about beating the Shadow-Cursed Shambling Mound, but these were some of the more straightforward options.
