Here’s the new cast of Aban Hawkins & the 1001 Spikes

Our death-filled hands-on demo

Jonathan and Tony were able to play some Aban Hawkins & the 1001 Spikes at PAX Prime 2013, including testing out guest characters in the new cooperative mode. The original release on Xbox 360 was tremendously fun in that familiar masochistic way, and based on how this video went, I’m utterly convinced co-op will be the way to go.

There’s fun to be had, even in death. Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez was there to tell us about the new characters — there are going to be more than a dozen in the final version, with varying abilities — and offer a bit of moral support. Eventually, they brought Tyrone (and PlayStation’s Shane Bettenhausen) on to show us all how 1001 Spikes is done. Dibs on Nyx of NyxQuest fame, is all I can say. Or maybe President Thompson — I adore Tempura of the Dead.

The game’s coming to Wii U, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and PS4, so no excuses. We need to play this.
