Helldivers 2 Malevelon Creek Cape: meaning and how to get it, explained

The first of many, we reckon.

The planet of Malevelon Creek in Helldivers 2 has quickly become the stuff of legend as one of the most brutal Automaton battlefields most players have encountered. As Super Earth and Automaton forces vie for control over Malevelon Creek, Arrowhead has decided to commemorate this push-and-pull with a unique cape.

The aptly named Fallen Hero’s Vengeance cape has been issued to all active Helldivers “by Presidential Decree,” as per the developer’s recent announcement on Discord. “The President of Super Earth has officially recognized this day as Malevelon Creek Memorial Day,” posted Arrowhead Games’ Spitz. “This week, in remembrance, all Helldivers will be issued a special commemorative cape, so they may carry the memory of their fallen companions into battle.”

The Malevelon Creek cape is, therefore, a free-to-claim goodie that you can go and pick up right this instant, as it appears to have been doled out as part of a hotfix-tier update over the past couple of hours. It’s a neat cape, too, with a snazzy (and totally not evil-looking) red skull and whatnot, which should make it fit with most of the game’s available armor sets.

It would seem, too, that all active Helldivers are being granted access to the Fallen Hero’s Vengeance at this time. You do not need to have jumped into Space Robot Vietnam to be eligible for the cape, which means virtually everyone’s going to be wearing it over the next couple of weeks. This whole thing also nicely ties into the game’s propensity for live service storytelling: if Arrowhead does end up celebrating April 3 as Malevelon Creek Memorial Day in the coming years, this will crystalize the community’s affinity for the planet in a delightfully organic way. Something that the developers couldn’t have predicted ahead of Malevelon Creek’s rise as the ultimate Automaton meme.

Good thing, too, as Helldiver forces will need all the morale boosters they can get. Automatons are now stronger than ever before, and everything points to them going after Cyberstan in short order. Who knows what might happen next?
