Game Freak: We’re keeping the main Pokemon games portable

Recommended Videos

Game Freak has got a good thing going with the Pokemon franchise. In case you were expecting to see any large changes to the company’s formula for success, allow art director Ken Sugimori and director/composer Junichi Masuda to set the record straight.

Official Nintendo Magazine wanted to see what the pair thought of a Wii version of the main DS series. “I am interested in strong visual effects,” begins Sugimori. “However, I believe that Pokemon is most appropriate for portable consoles.”

Junichi Masuda responds similarly, saying “I’m really not thinking about having the main Pokemon games on the Wii, because using portable consoles means you can always carry Pokemon around with you and you can play with other players, so that’s the future I’d like to emphasize.”

How do you feel about this? I think experimentation should be applauded, but it makes plenty of sense why Nintendo and Game Freak wouldn’t want to deviate from what is clearly a winning strategy.
