EA Sports has announced that its first title for Nintendo’s 3D handheld, the 3DS, will be Madden NFL Football. The game will be available as a launch title for the platform, which will presumably hit North American shelves during the first half of 2011.

EA is calling it a “comprehensive handheld experience,” complete with 11-on-11 and 5-on-5 games, and a full season mode. The handheld’s 3D capabilities will be pushed with modes like “Spotlight Moments” and “Call Your Shots.” The latter is a new feature that will let players use the 3DS touch screen to draw their own plays on-the-fly.

It looks like they’re targeting a wide audience with the handheld version, with three types of play calling, including GameFlow, Classic, and Arcade. GameFlow is for sports dummies like me, with the game automatically choosing the best plays. Arcade mode will simplify the options, limiting the playbook, while Classic will give you the full range of choices veterans are accustomed to.

Madden NFL Football
is being developed by EA’s North Carolina studio. Not sure how these screenshots EA sent along will translate to the final product, but they’re certainly looking impressive for a handheld. What do you think?
