While nobody seems to care about it much, Nintendo is showing off a new 3D game system in a couple of months. It’s 3D without the silly glasses. If you’re wondering how it works without 3D glasses, perhaps this new Hitachi screen diagram will give you an idea.

It’s called parallax barrier tech. The silly diagram above shows how it works with some beady eyeballs and lasers and whatnot. No, it’s vertical slits in the IPS LCD that direct light to give a 3D effect sans glasses. If you care about this specific screen, the specs say that this is a 3.1-inch panel with a resolution of 480 x 854 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1.

Engadget says that this Hitachi screen could be a contender for Nintendo’s new system. They point out that both Sharp and Hitachi have a relationship with the game maker.

I’m curious to see how the inevitable Mario 3D will look.
