Call Yuji Naka’s new game Rodea the Sky Soldier

We’ve got a crap load of new info on Yuji Naka’s new game. First off, it has a English name now; Rodea the Sky Soldier. We’ve also got some official screens of the Wii version of the game. I’m guessing the 3DS version will look pretty much the same, except with a few less polygons, and of course, an extra dimension.

I’m still a little concerned about the game’s controls, but all these additional details have me feeling more hopeful. Rodea will have multiple power-ups, 4-player multi-player, massive bosses, tons of objects to interact with and unique environmental hazards, and most importantly, an emphasis on uniting “control” with “sense”.

I take that last part to mean that, if all goes well, you wont even have to think about where you want move in Rodea. You’ll be able to just “sense” where you want to be, and then you’ll be there. That’s how all the best shmups are, and it sounds like Rodea is working to keep that tradition going.

As hopeful as I may sound, that hope is definitely peppered with a peck of pensive pessimism. So many great Wii games don’t quite reach their potential, mostly due to lack of funds, and I fear that Rodea may meet the same fate. Either way, I can’t wait to find out for myself when the game is released later this year.
