Ponder this fan mock-up of a DS-to-Wii U adapter

One of the coolest releases for the GameCube was not a game at all but rather the Game Boy Player attachment. Sure, the SNES had the Super Game Boy, but SNES never suffered from the major software droughts that the GC did. Being able to play not only your GBA titles but also your GB and GBC games on the big screen gave new purpose to that poor little lunch box.

The Wii U, with it’s touchscreen-sporting GamePad, could feasibly allow for compatibility with DS titles. Dtoid reader Silas decided to run with the idea and whip up a concept of what a DS-to-Wii U adapter could look like. Dubbed “DSU,” it’s a slim device that sits just underneath that Wii U console. I’m assuming it could be placed atop the console if you choose, as the “DSU” would probably be plugged into a rear port and not into a docking bay like the Game Boy Player was.

I do see problems with such a device, however. While games in which the touchscreen only displays menus and such, like Pokémon and New Super Mario Bros., would no doubt translate fine, games that treat both screens as a single super-tall display, like Contra 4 and Sonic Rush, would understandably suffer. And what about games that keep the main action on the touchscreen? The benefits of having an external display would be lost.

That said, it would be nice if Nintendo was able to allow a selection of DS games to play the big screen, via either an adapter or the Virtual Console. What do you guys think? Would you like to be able to play DS games on the Wii U? What do you think of Silas’ “DSU” mock-up? How would you address the compatibility issues I just presented?
