In every round of Phasmophobia you face, you’ll encounter one specific type of ghost. For a long time, there was no way to control which ghost was present on the map, but the Quality of Life update that launched on Aug. 25, 2026 changed this.

We can now select the ghost type, but since this feature wasn’t always around and is quite hidden, there’s a decent chance you might not know how it works or where to find it. It’s quite a powerful gameplay feature, so you’ll want to learn how to select the ghost type in Phasmophobia.

You can select the ghost type under the Ghost tab when creating a custom match in Phasmophobia. This feature is only available in custom rounds, so whenever you’re hoping to use it, you’ll have to switch over to one of these. It can be a bit tricky to find and figure out how to use, so here’s a full walkthrough of how to make it happen.

  • Interact with the main menu board in the lobby. While in the lobby, approach the main menu board and load up a lobby, either in single-player or multiplayer mode.
  • Select a custom match. Once the lobby is ready, change the difficulty level to Custom 1, Custom 2, or Custom 3. These are the only types of matches where you can freely modify the ghost type.
  • Modify the match settings. With one of the custom match presets selected, switch over to the Ghost tab. Then, select the pen hovering over a square icon to change these settings.
  • Choose the ghost type. Once you’re at the point where you can modify the Ghost settings, look for the Ghost section with the text “Force a specific ghost type to spawn” listed under it. Then, click through the options until you find the ghost you want.
  • Save your modifications. After changing the ghost type and making any other changes you want, make sure you press the Apply option in the bottom right corner to lock in your choices.

After choosing the ghost type, you can then load into your custom match on any map. While playing with this preset active, the ghost haunting the location will be whatever you specified. If you want to change the ghost type to a different one, you can exit the round and go through the same steps to switch it up at any point.

Can you select the ghost type in any match in Phasmophobia?

No, you cannot choose the ghost type present in any type of match. Only custom matches made by you, your friends, or other ghost hunters have this feature available. To select the ghost type present in the round, you’ll need to play on Custom 1, Custom 2, or Custom 3 and make sure this setting is modified before you jump in.

You can’t pick the ghost type when playing on any of the main difficulty levels, as all of the settings for these matches are locked. This includes the weekly challenge mode, Amateur difficulty, Intermediate difficulty, Professional difficulty, Nightmare difficulty, and Insanity difficulty.

This feature is a great way to familiarize yourself with various ghosts’ unique behaviors and clues that don’t count as official evidence. Some ghosts you may want to try and study using this mechanic include the Deildegast, AswangKormosObamboGallu, and Dayan.
