3DS might someday support 3D video chat

The possible applications for the 3DS are intriguing and I’m sure all sorts of good ideas will spring to software developers minds as they work with it. Speaking with Forbes magazine, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata mentioned an idea that is clearly not good but will no doubt be implemented by someone somewhere because, for some inexplicable reason, people seem to want it: 3D video chat.

No reason why the new handheld shouldn’t be able to handle it. But that’s always the problem with mad scientists, isn’t it? Always asking, “why not?” I’m must be in a silent minority by not wanting my ugly mug plastered on someone else’s screen to watch every nervous or awkward thing I might do in the course of a normal phone conversation. Distance separates us for a reason, people.

None of this is to suggest Nintendo is actively working towards 3D video chat capability on the 3DS. Iwata might have just been throwing that out there because it’s something that the device could conceivably do that the people who read Forbes can visualize.
