We experience a Blackout on Destructoid Impulse and find a battle royale better than PUBG

So long battle royale games, hello battle royale game modes

In today’s episode of Destructoid Impulse: we take a look at Call of Duty‘s answer to battle royale in the form of Blackout. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about the biggest trend in video games and possibly the biggest franchise in video games. Me and Associate Editor Peter Glagowski are ready to ride the waves of disdain from the title on this episode alone!

Admittedly, this is the first time I’ve been interested in a Call of Duty game since Modern Warfare 2, as much of the Call of Duty formula never kept my interest. However, back in early 2017 when PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was taking Steam, Twitch, and my sleepless hours alike by storm, I couldn’t help but wonder how many developers (and drooling executive mouths for that matter) were scrambling to capitalize on or further improve this formula.

Now with the upcoming release of Black Ops 4, I think we’re gonna begin to see the first wave of triple-A takes on this concept and even the departure from battle royale “games” into simply battle royale game modes. Here’s hoping somebody at SCEA is seeing all this and revives Twisted Metal with a vehicle-based battle royale mode.
