Dev stresses they won’t compromise quality
Spin-off pseudo-sequel Terraria: Otherworld has officially been cancelled. In a post on the official Terraria forms, the developer Re-Logic has detailed that the quality of the product after three years of development was not where they wanted it to be and that the team didn’t want to split development between other projects and Otherworld. As such, the decision was made to cancel the game and shift focus to newer projects.
“Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck,” reads the post. “It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term in regard to our future games.”
As for what the future holds, Re-Logic has stressed that active development on the original Terraria will not be ceased and that any plans for spin-offs or sequels won’t be shared so far in advance to mitigate future disappointment (should they also be cancelled). Re-Logic also wants to stress that it owns all of the code, artwork and design that went into Otherworld, so any hinted features of that game could end up in future projects.
Whatever does happen with the remaining assets, I wish Re-Logic the best. I can’t imagine how hard it had to be to cancel a project you’ve spent years on, but hopefully that decision leads to a brighter future.
