The wait for a new Far Cry entry continues, but development is ramping up for one new entry while a spin-off has been put out to pasture.
According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, a new “ambitious” Far Cry title has entered development while a planned extraction shooter spin-off has now been canceled. It doesn’t sound like a new sequel will be ready any time soon, regardless.
According to Henderson, the new Far Cry is codenamed Kodiak and is “an open-world FPS where ‘player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage.'” It’s anyone’s guess what that means for now, but it’s at least nice to know that a new game is supposedly in the works.
This new title is said to be built on the foundations of the canceled extraction shooter, codenamed Maverick, which Henderson said was in the midst of some serious development hell over the past few years. According to his sources, the next game is “really ambitious” and several years away from release.
Far Cry 6 launched back in 2021 and was met with tepid reviews. On Metacritic, it has a critic score of 73 and a much lower user average of 5.5, so it’s no surprise to see the next game taking its time. We are already in the middle of the longest period of time between releases since the series began almost 20 years ago, so the hope is that any new game will be handled with care to prevent a repeat of the most recent one.
The last Far Cry game I played and truly enjoyed was Far Cry 5. I never heard too many positive things about Far Cry 6, so I didn’t bother, although I do now own it on Steam after some steep discounts. Will I play it? Probably not, but the chances of me playing it are higher than the planned extraction shooter, which is clearly the industry’s favorite new flavor of the moment.
