100+ games left to ship
According to chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi, the Xbox 360 is “incredibly profitable now in the tail” and will continue for “another three years.” Not bad at all for a system that launched back in 2005. Remember the ridiculous MTV debut?
“We are going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert,” he said at the Citi Global Technology Conference. “So it isn’t like the day we ship the Xbox One your [Xbox 360] won’t work. We will continue to support it. In fact, we’re going to ship over one hundred new games on Xbox 360. So you’ll be able to still play your games, just not on the same exact box.”
A number like that isn’t particularly meaningful unless you get a kick out of playing as many games as possible regardless of their quality. At least for the next year or so, however, there should be enough decent cross-generational titles to keep the Xbox 360 going while players transition to next-gen. I’ll be curious to see how (and when) Xbox Live Arcade comes to a close.
