PlayStation’s latest AI upscaling tech in partnership with AMD arrives today on the base PS5, joining PSSR on the PS5 Pro.

The new performance tier of AI upscaling is called QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), and Sony says it’s “a quick new evolution of PSSR” that is “built on two key innovations: hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5” and “a streamlined neural network architecture.”

“With these, we are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5,” Sony said. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.”

The first two games to use the tech are out today with new updates, in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition, but “will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers,” so expect to see it in more games soon.

“QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey,” Insomniac’s head of tech Mike Fitzgerald said. “It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5.”

You can check out how QSSR looks in action with some videos on the PlayStation Blog, but in short, it’s meant to enhance “fine details” both up close and at a distance, making things like fabric or foliage afar look a bit more crisp.

“At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Yōtei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail,” said Sucker Punch’s lead rendering engineer Jasim Patry. “QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now. We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal.”

If I’m being perfectly honest, the changes that AI upscaling brings to PS5 games are not all that noticeable to me. But hey, maybe I’m in the minority.
