SEGA denies Aliens: Colonial Marines was outsourced

Claims wholeheartedly that Gearbox developed the game

Shortly before the embargo broke on Aliens: Colonial Marines reviews, a potential explanation for the game’s woeful quality begun to surface. According to reports, Gearbox Software outsourced the solo campaign to TimeGate Studios (and possibly other studios) and focused only on multiplayer. An interesting development — except SEGA says it’s not true!

Dark Side of Gaming quotes an emphatic denial from a SEGA spokesperson who, at CM‘s launch party, confirmed Gearbox had a dominant hand in all areas of development. TimeGate helped, the representative explains, but wasn’t a primary developer.

“Absolutely not, the game has been developed by Gearbox Software,” said the rep, when asked if Aliens was outsourced. “Other studios [like Timegate] helped Gearbox on the production of single and multiplayer.”

So, that’s SEGA’s official line. It’ll be interesting to see if any official explanation is given for Colonial Marines‘ shocking release, because I’d say one is definitely required at this point.
