Rumour: New Nintendo Switch coming in 2019

New display hopes to keep sales momentum pushing forward

According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has plans to release an upgraded Nintendo Switch console at some point in the second half of 2019, possibly as soon as next summer.

Based on the report, the new unit will be compatible with all existing software, but will feature upgraded display hardware, similar to that used in modern smartphones (though the report mentions that Nintendo are not expected to adopt Apple’s recently-integrated OLED technology).

It’s not impossible to imagine Nintendo releasing an upgraded version of their successful hybrid-console, especially given their history of re-releasing previous handheld consoles – such as the Game Boy and the Nintendo DS – with clearer or higher-tech displays. Of course, this is all speculation for now, but we’ll keep you informed should we hear anything concrete, but I expect that’s pretty unlikely anytime soon.
