PS Vita hit record low sales in Japan

PlayStation Vita sales have hit rock bottom in Japan. Yes, again. Sony’s handheld, which launched late last year in its home country, sold only 8,931 units this week, down from 12,105.

The 3DS stands atop the pile with 72,115 units sold, followed by the PS3 at 19,370. The PSP is still outperforming its successor with 14,804. The Vita takes fourth place, followed by the Wii with 7,099.

Whether you like the Vita or not, one cannot deny that it’s been pretty underwhelming in Japan. I can’t say it’s too much of a shock, either. Despite a large selection of launch titles, the Vita’s not had a lot else going for it. Over the past few weeks, I’ve tried to find excuses to turn it on, since I genuinely enjoy the machine, only to find myself using Twitter and nothing else.

Doubtless Sony will play the “rabbit and hare” card as per the norm, promising big things in the future. Hopefully it makes good on such promises, because I really don’t want the Vita to die forgotten and lonely in a shed.
