Pokemon series sales topped 279 million as of last month

The power of Pokemon

I mean, everyone knows how big Pokemon really is, with its massive game line and merch/media empire, but this recent sales number really puts things into perspective. According to Famitsu, as of February 29, 2016, Nintendo has sold 279 million copies of Pokemon. That number includes spinoffs as well as the core entries, but still, very impressive.

Breaking down that number further, Famitsu reports that the main series is responsible for 210 million of that figure. It looks like the “multiple game” concept they created over 20 years ago paid off. It makes sense, as nearly every family I knew had both copies of each game, and for the past decade my wife and I have bought two for every launch.
