Niantic is currently in preparation for the 2020 edition of its annual gathering, Pokémon GO Fest, which takes place later this month. While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has put paid to plans of a physical get-together, Pokémon GO players from around the world will still be able to partake in a special “virtual” weekend, which will offer challenges, bonuses, and a host of cute critters just waiting to be added to your menagerie.

To get the Poké Ball rolling, Niantic has released a trailer for the weekend, directed by none other than Rian Johnson, who also helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2019 murder-mystery Knives Out. The 30-second short sees Pokémon GO fans literally tearing at reality in order to discover Pikachu, Eevee, Snorlax and friends hiding in plain sight. I wish Eevee would show up at my door. That’d make my day.

In related news, new figures from the number-crunchers over at Sensor Tower revealed that Niantic’s mobile title has raked in a bewildering $3.6 billion USD in revenue since its summer 2016 launch. In fact, Pokémon GO is currently on track to have another record year in 2020, despite the global pandemic keeping its playerbase both indoors and socially distanced. It seems, for now at any rate, that there’s no stopping this juggernaut.

Pokémon GO Fest takes place July 25-26. Pokémon GO is available now on iOS and Android devices.
