Official The Witcher 3 modding tool is available for playtesting

It should fully launch by the end of the year.

Fans have been modding The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC ever since it launched back in 2015. Later this year, though, developer CD Projekt Red is releasing its own modding tool for the game, but you can test it out for yourself before then.

Signing up for playtest access is incredibly simple; just click the option for it on the tool’s Steam listing. You aren’t guaranteed to gain access straightaway, though, as CD Projekt Red has noted in a Steam news post that playtest access will be distributed in batches. So, be sure to keep an eye on your Steam Library for when The Witcher 3 REDkit Playtest is added. Prospective playtesters have also been warned that since they’ll be trying out a beta version of the tool, it’s bound to have issues that haven’t been ironed out yet.

The tool promises to be incredibly comprehensive since it’s based on the very tools the developers used for making The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red has said this should “allow for nearly limitless freedom in modding [The Witcher 3] and, best of all, it’ll be a free download, so there’ll be no reason for modders not to at least try it out. With how creative modders can be, it’ll be interesting to see what they can come up with using an officially supported tool like this.

This isn’t the first time CD Projekt Red has offered official mod support. Cyberpunk 2077 has its own free REDMod DLC that can be used to create and install mods for the game. Hopefully, such a tool will also be made for the next Witcher game as well, and not release nearly 10 years after the game does. Unofficially dubbed The Witcher 4, the game has over 400 developers working on it according to an earnings call from last month, but there are still no real details on it, not even its actual title.
