Microsoft’s cross-play and cross-buy ‘Play Anywhere’ initiative is officially underway

With ReCore and Forza Horizon 3 this month

ReCore might not be the best way to celebrate it, but Microsoft’s “Play Anywhere” concept has officially seen the light of day. Although it was tested with Quantum Break it was haphazardly facilitated by download codes through Xbox messages (much like Nintendo’s system) — now it’s fully integrated into the Windows Store.

In other words, if you own a Windows 10 PC and an Xbox One, you can download specific games from either storefront and own it on both platforms. When multiplayer hits later this month for Forza Horizon 3 (another Play Anywhere game), it’ll also feature cross-play between both. Expect that review close to launch!

Next up on the calendar for Play Anywhere is Gears of War 4, which should be an interesting one to watch given the popularity of shooters on PC. It’s taken them a long time to implement it, but I’m glad it’s here.
