Sony currently claims an install base of 10 million in Europe, while Microsoft recently revealed a 360 install base of 9 million. Despite this, the Xbox 360 brand holder claims that Sony is doing it wrong and that MS still leads by about a million units. This is because of a special thing called Magic Logic.
“We’re confident we are actually around a million units ahead,” argues Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis. “We count installed base differently to them.
“We count the number of units in the hands of consumers. We are committed to continuing that momentum — not only in places like the UK, France and Germany. Continued growth in all parts of Europe is integral to winning [against PS3] overall.”
I love how Microsoft can just say “it’s different” and that automatically means they’ve won. Both companies have been guilty of these brilliant logic leaps in the past, simply claiming that something is the way it is because they said so. I guarantee that this generation will end with both companies claiming they won it.
