Microsoft is pretty good at the ol’ spin game. America’s NPD data comes out tomorrow, and Microsoft does not believe that it beat out the competition this Holiday season, even with Kinect backing it up. However, Microsoft has turned this into a positive — suggesting it will only lose because it sold too many consoles!

“I found out we ran out of consoles at end of the month (!) so don’t expect to win Dec,” Tweets Major Nelson, Xbox Live community manager and Gary Busey’s more attractive cousin.

Nelson adds that January and February are looking tight as well, so those who need to get their Dance Central on may find systems in short supply.

So what do you reckon? Is Microsoft being dramatic to drum up some panic buying, or is it experiencing a “Wii circa 2006” situation? How are the Xbox 360 shelves in your local retailers doing?
