The 14th anniversary of the first Avengers movie is upon us. Yeah, I know. Gross.
If you’ll allow me to shake off the aches and pains of that realization, I’m excited to share that Marvel Rivals’ new asymmetric PvP mode launching tomorrow may be the perfect way to celebrate the memories of the movie that really kicked the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the next gear.
Path to Doomsday: The Avengers features one-vs-six PvP action, where one solo player as a powered-up Loki attempts to fend off the original six MCU Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. In the footage revealed today above, Loki appears to be larger than normal in the game, and with a whole new suite of powers to level the playing field against the superheroes. It’s unclear specifically how the mode will play or feel, but for now, I’m happy enough with huffing on the nostalgia.
The trailer features the iconic Avengers theme song from the 2012 movie, and new costumes for Iron Man and Loki depicting their appearances in the movie. And the video ends on that iconic shot of the heroes apprehending the Asgardian god at the end of the film, along with several recreations of Hulk slamming Loki around like a ragdoll.
I’m a sucker for nostalgia. Always have been. The mode might stink (it does look odd, and I don’t understand why it appears to be placed in Asgard and not New York), but for now, I’m all in as Marvel chugs along towards the latest Avengers film at the end of the year.
The first Avengers movie is just the beginning of in-game events, as Rivals has plans to have similar content drops for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame leading up to Doomsday in December. I’ll be checking all of them out with my rose-tinted glasses on.
