M. Kopas on Twine, Puzzle Platformers, Sociology and more

Get to know the people that make great videogames

The week before last on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were lucky to welcome Merritt Kopas to the program. Merritt is a multi-talented powerhouse, gifted at writing, pixel-pushing, game design, public speaking, and the study of sociology. I got the sense that she didn’t necessarily see hard and fast barriers between those various pursuits. Game design, Poetry, Sociology — it’s all just systems. She’s expressing ideas about systems through systems. The results are works that are often raw and personal. The level of honesty and vulnerability Merritt is willing to present to her audience is amazing.

We talked about all those things, the magic of Twine, the class barriers that still permeate game culture, the real difference between Saints Row IV and GTA V, her upcoming game Medusa Medusa, her site Forrest Ambassador, and inevitably, capitalism. When she said her plan was to “burn that sh*t down,” I nearly broke my face from smiling so hard.

Thanks again to Merritt for appearing on show, and be sure to tune in this week for… the rerun of Sup Holmes with Leigh Alexander. We’re taking this Sunday off for a wedding, but we’ll be back on October 13th with a live episode with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Citizens of Earth‘s Ryan Vandendyke. I’m looking forward to it!
