Konami punishes woman for getting pregnant, gets sued

Konami recently lost a lawsuit against a former employee after she was punished for taking maternity leave.

Yoko Sekiguchi took the six months of paid maternity leave that she was entitled to, only to discover upon her return to work that she had been demoted and her salary reduced by ¥200,000. Her employer stated that the demotion was due to the “burden” her pregnancy represented.

That was in 2009. Now, two years later, the courts have ruled in her favor. She only received ¥950,000 of the ¥33 million yen she’d demanded, but hey, a win’s a win. Plus, it is nice to know Konami’s consistent — it’s about as backward with worker’s rights as it is with everything else it does.
