Fighting game fans certainly have a big weekend ahead. Not only is Nexon debuting its shrouded-in-mystery fighter DNF Duel, but also receiving the open beta treatment is SNK’s great King of Fighters XV, which returns for a second round of free-to-play pugilism. The beta goes live on PS4 and PS5 today and will run until Monday, December 20. Ho-Kay!

The second King of Fighters XV beta, much like the first, will give players the opportunity to check out the game’s Training and Tutorial modes, and battle it out in both online and offline Vs. play. Both PlayStation crossplay and rollback netcode are in full effect, and will hopefully provide as similarly smooth an experience as I received during the initial beta. SNK has swapped out the roster of playable characters, giving fans a chance to check out Meitenkun, Antonov, K’, Blue Mary, Ryo Sakazaki, Terry Bogard, as well as newcomers Krohnen and the super cool Isla. Just download the game client and you should be ready to rock.

The King of Fighters XV, currently in development for PC and console platforms, sees the long-running franchise fully embrace its new 2.5D universe. While the visual style is a bit of a shock to the system, the fact remains that the gameplay is faithful to the KoF‘s of yore, featuring fast-paced, challenging, and deep combat, with an emphasis on a variety of meter mechanics and precise space control. The King of Fighters XV promises to be the biggest entry in the series to date, with a whopping roster of characters, a full Story Mode, top-quality online play, and ports to numerous platforms.

The King of Fighters XV launches on PS4, PS5, PC, and Xbox One on February 17. You can check out my thoughts on the first beta right here.
