While Sony and various publishers talk up 3D gaming and declare it to be the future, Nintendo overlord Satoru Iwata claims that Nintendo was tinkering with it years ago, as far back as the GameCube. He says his company was working on the tech and that the system was capable of displaying such visuals, but the special LCD screens were too expensive.

At one point, there was a fully 3D version of Luigi’s Mansion, and the GameBoy Advance SP was also made, boasting the same “no glasses” gimmick that the 3DS has. At the time, however, the screen resolution was far too low and the project never got off the ground.

Since the launch and failure of the virtual boy, it would appear that Nintendo has been dabbling with 3D for a long time, with less than pleasant results. The 3DS is its latest attempt and it looks set to buck the trend. Will it win, or will it fall prey to what I have now decided is a Nintendo 3D CUUUUURSE!?
