Before you can get Clay, you’re going to have to unlock at least one of the following biomes:

  • Glade of Trust – 5,000 Dreamlight
  • Sunlit Plateau – 7,000 Dreamlight
  • Forgotten Lands – 15,000 Dreamlight

Once you’ve got one or more of these biomes unlocked, you’re going to have to equip your shovel and start digging. Clay can only be found by digging up the ground and I’m not ashamed to admit that during the aforementioned Clock Tower quest, I dug up the entirety of the Glade of Trust in order to get enough clay.

Occasionally, Kristoff’s Stall will stock Clay. Although this is a rare occurrence, it’s always worth checking daily to see if you can get lucky and purchase 10 extra Clay for your stockpile. On Kristoff’s Stall, Clay costs 20 Star Coins per lump.

How to quickly get rid of dig holes

If you’ve dug up a whole biome in your search for Clay, you’re going to be left with a lot of holes and the prospect of filling them all in can seem daunting. Don’t worry, though. There’s an easy way to get rid of them:

  1. Open your furniture menu and navigate to rugs.
  2. Place your rug down over the holes, causing them to disappear.
  3. Remain in the furniture menu and keep moving your rug around to close up all the holes.
  4. This is the most important step – leave your rug in its final spot and make sure you leave the furniture menu with it in place. Do not remove the rug before exiting.
  5. Re-enter the furniture menu. It’s now safe to remove the rug and all of your dig holes will be gone!

Placing a rug down over holes works in the same way as placing a piece of furniture overlapping another piece of furniture. It removes the original, in this case the hole, to allow the new item, in this case the rug, to be placed down.
