Games of the week for 06/06/10: Z-List celebrity edition

Recommended Videos

I have officially obtained the rank of “minor Z-list celebrity that nobody cares about”, making this the most important day of everybody’s lives. Basically, I was on the BBC’s World Service station this morning talking about Russia’s proposal to ban games like Modern Warfare 2 due to negative stereotypes. Although I was on the show — called Newshour — for about two minutes, it was still freaky to think my voice was broadcast around the world!

If you do the BBC iPlayer thing, you might be able to find the show and give it a listen. Otherwise, this means nothing to you and was just shameless self promotion. Speaking of which, you should really pick up the July issue of GamePro, where I happen to have a guest column on the state of modern multiplayer modes!

So anyway, videogames! Hit the jump for those.

North: Persona 3 Portable is even better than I thought it would be. It’s just that I’m….well, I’m hitting on guys.

PerLee: I’m playing Flash-based typing games. I really don’t know why.

Holmes: Trauma Team, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Art Style: light trax, Contra Rebirth, Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth, Gradius Rebirth, Metal Gear Solid 4 (still so much stuff I need to unlock!) and that River City Ransom SNES semi-sequel from Japan. It’s basically a 2D Yakuza game, which means it’s awesome.

Chester: Been playing Bit.Trip.Runner, and a bunch of games via Mac Steam — The Path, Bob Came in Pieces, and what have you. Oh, and Green Day: Rock Band. Review on that last one this coming Tuesday.

Zimmerman: I played Be Sick In Bed most of the week.

Saturday, I attended the Burch/Davis wedding, which naturally meant a trip to the arcade. Played some Asteroids, Marvel vs. Capcom, and an Attack From Mars pinball machine where the multiplier triggers were
unresponsive and the right flipper double-tapped on full depression. Sad for such a fun machine.

Also, Pocket Fighter, at which Jonathan Ross decimated me repeatedly.

Sarkar: Still playing tons of Red Dead Redemption, although I took a break to play a couple of hours of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with some of the Joystiq guys on Thursday night. Good times, as always.

I’m also playing Backbreaker for review. So far, the game is equal parts cool and frustrating.

Concelmo: Played through Alan Wake. Loved the Twin Peaks-vibe at the beginning, and really wished it stuck with that throughout the entire game. The characters were interesting; the story different and confusing enough to intrigue me. But, by the end, everything started feeling rather repetitive. Don’t want to criticize it too much, as I really liked it … I just wanted a little bit more.

And … what happened at the end? I think I know, but I am a little confused. Can someone help?

Also started Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. So far, I am REALLY liking it, which both surprises me and makes me feel a little embarrassed for some reason. I feel like this is a game that I am supposed to not like.

Grim: I got and beat Alan Wake this week too; already going back for collectibles and plan to do a Nighmare run soon. I knew I was going to love this game, but man, I didn’t think I’d love it this much. The look on my face when they first introduced the lamp lady was so priceless.

Sterling: Transformers: War for Cybertron was my big game this week and I liked it quite a lot, as if you couldn’t already tell. I have been trying to get through my backlog of games that I started for fun, chiefly The Forgotten Sands, Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The new PoP I officially stopped playing. The Prince feels more sluggish and less responsive than he used to, and while it’s a good game, that’s really affected my enjoyment and I’ve decided I’ve played enough. As far as Red Dead goes, my opinions are torn. It’s got some great ambient stuff and a number of the missions so far have been lots of fun, but there’s also loads of boring stuff and random missions that are just a pain in the ass. I don’t even need to tell you about SMG2. You all know it’s good.

Also played me some World at War Zombies II. I can’t believe they managed to make this a franchise!
