Games of the week for 05/30/10: Tim Minchin edition

Recommended Videos

Anybody who follows me on Twitter or Facebook will know that I have become obsessed with Tim Minchin lately. The singer/songwriter/skeptic/handsome bastard is a genius and well worth watching. The above video is “The Good Book”, his very cynical yet thoroughly brilliant dissection of The Bible. If religious evisceration isn’t your thing, he does loads of other stuff too. An afternoon with Minchin on YouTube is an afternoon well spent.

In other news, videogames happened. Hit the jump to see which ones!

Grim: Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption. So good!

Concelmo: Still working through the after-120 star section of Super Mario Galaxy 2 that, for people that know what I am talking about, is HARD AS BALLS! It makes me so happy, though. Also finishing up the final case in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. Love this game!

North: I’m playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 again, and somehow it seems harder this time around. Also I found out that the Wii Motion Plus helps make picking up star bits a bit easier.

Razak: Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Professor Layton while I’m traveling over the weekend.

Holmes: Mario Galaxy 2, Bit.Trip Runner, back into Monster Hunter Tri for the new event quests, and Grill Off with Ultra Hand; a WiiWare game that costs 80 Club Nintendo coins. For those that don’t know, you get 10 coins just for filling out a online survey after buying a game. 8 surveys, and you get a free WiiWare game about using an ancient Nintendo toy to barbecue meat. I wish Sony and Microsoft would do stuff like this.

Oh, and I also got Art Style: Light Trax. It’s sort of screwed up, but I love it.

Chester: Playing Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands on the PSP and the Wii, both of which are wildly different than the 360/PS3 version I just reviewed. As it turns out, that’s certainly not a bad thing; enjoying both of them.

Also played the first hour (or so) of Red Dead Redemption and nothing happened. I rode a horse, I shot some foxes (or was it wolves?), I rode my horse again. Oh, and I got shot in a cut-scene. It gets more interesting, right? Also played the tutorial of UFC 2010, which took me about an hour, as well.

I was also inspired to pick up Bit.Trip Runner, which so far is pretty great. Really wish there were global/friends leaderboards for WiiWare games; this doesn’t just apply to Bit.Trip, it applies to everything on the Wii. Why would this have been so difficult to implement?

Sterling: I played Alpha Protocol, which apparently I loved, then pretended to hate for pageviews. Fundamentalist logic at its finest! Also played Super Mario Galaxy 2 thanks to Mr. Chester, which I actually DO love. And ModNation Racers along with Red Dead Redemption.

Also playing Dual Blades on my iPod as it was free this weekend and it’s kind of fucking awesome. No idea if it is still free but if it is, you should get it.

Tolentino: This week has been like a “tasting menu” sort of week for me, just an hour or so of Red Dead Redemption, Resident Evil 5, Just Cause 2, Heavy Rain, Lost Planet 2, God of War 3, Trauma Team, Monster Hunter Tri, Mario Galaxy 2, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and Mass Effect 2. That’s the advantage (?) of having a young nephew with a short attention span around: you get to “ten minute taste” all the games you bought but put on the shelf because you were playing something else.

On the downside, said nephew just told me that Cloud and Sephiroth are awesome, and that they’re “old-school” for appearing in Kingdom Hearts 1. I feel so goddamn old now.

Aziz: Played HYDRO THUNDER!!!!!!!!!!!! Also was in a Just Dance Dance Off here at Wedgecon. I lost.

Sarkar: I checked out the Backbreaker Xbox Live demo earlier this week, which was fun even though I had a tough time getting accustomed to the unique way that it plays. I now have a review copy in hand, so I’m going to dig in much further this week. Otherwise, all I played was Red Dead Redemption. I haven’t done an actual story mission in forever; I’ve just been riding around hunting animals and picking flowers to fulfill challenges, which is really enjoyable because it encourages you to go out and explore the expansive, varied world that Rockstar San Diego crafted. I can’t stop playing it!
