Eryi’s Action is a platformer designed to be unfair

It’s just as funny as it sounds

Eryi’s Action is available now on Steam. If you haven’t heard of it, the game is notorious for its difficulty, and was designed to frustrate hardcore platformer fans. For instance, right after starting the first stage, I died in less than three seconds after stepping on a hidden spike trap that sprang from the floor.

I was in heaven, basically. Five seconds later, I jumped into a floating block expecting a power-up, and an enemy pops out — death. 10 seconds into the level, and an invisible block that appears as I’m making a jump over a pit causes me to bump my head and fall in the void below — death.

Eryi’s Action is what many gamers refer to as “fake difficulty.” Rather than sport a design like Volgarr where you can see everything beforehand and react accordingly, Eryi’s tricks and traps are often completely hidden from view, and at times, require some form of memorization.

Now, I happen to enjoy a challenge (and a good laugh at some of the more absurd deaths), so I’m having quite a bit of fun with the game. It’s also not that difficult, as there are checkpoints, unlimited continues, and some of the traps are predictable once you know what to expect. Most people will probably hate it though, so keep that in mind if you don’t like games that are hard just for the sake of it.

If you’re interested, you can find Eryi’s Action here on Steam for $4.99.
