Developers are starting to share performance comparisons across Xbox Series X, S, and One S

Here’s how The Falconeer stacks up

One of the omnipresent conversations hanging over the next generation of consoles is what exact tech improvements can we expect. Everyone has come to terms with the fact that this isn’t going to be mindblowing stuff like moving from SNES to N64 back in 1996. We may never see that kind of jump ever again.

As we inch closer to the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X — and we’re almost exactly a month away at this point — we’re starting to see some hard data about what new consoles are able to achieve. This morning, The Falconeer‘s developer, Tomas Sala, shared exact performance comparisons for how his game runs on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X:

It scales up about how you’d expect. The Falconeer is able to achieve 1080p and 60fps on Xbox One S, but much higher on new consoles. Series S hits an upscaled 4K at 60fps in native mode, and 1080p at 120fps in performance mode. Series X hits native 4K at 60fps as its standard, and runs at an upscaled 4K at 120fps in performance mode.

Given that cutting down loading times is a huge selling point for the next generation, it’s no surprise that Xbox Series S and X load games much faster. Load times for The Falconeer are more than three times quicker when compared to Xbox One S. Anyone who’s familiar with SSD versus HDD performance is saying “Well yeah, duh.”

The Falconeer‘s performance won’t necessarily be the story for all games across Xbox’s devices. But, it’s good to catalog as many as we can as we start to learn how the disparity looks.

Now, I’d like to cap off this post by drawing your attention to the easy-to-miss phrase in the graphic that says “Power your big ass bird.” That’s a good tagline for this game, a good motto for next-gen consoles, and, really, just smart advice for living well.
