Destiny 2: Into the Light brings back Season of Plunder’s best feature

An instant level up to the Powerful cap? Don't mind if I do.

While there’s a lot of Destiny 2 news to get excited about between the new Onslaught horde mode, a returning and retooled slate of weapons via the Brave Arsenal, and the Hall of Champions social space, one glossed-over detail deserves more attention. During the second of three Into the Light streams, Bungie noted that the Gift of the Thunder Gods cache, or one just like it, would appear in the Hall of Champions. For those who might not remember, the last and only other time this chest of goodies appeared was during Season 18, Season of Plunder.

Into the Light is a content update coming to Destiny 2 on April 9. To tease and prepare players for Into the LightBungie announced three livestreams taking place on Twitch. The first stream showed off Onslaught, while stream two focused on rewards and the Hall of Champions. Within that second stream, Bungie, in passing, noted that the Hall would host an array of fantastic rewards, with a Gift of the Thunder Gods chest on the menu.

What is the Gift of the Thunder Gods?

The Gift of the Thunder Gods is a cache of equipment first featured in Season 18. During the Season of Plunder, a chest was made available within the H.E.L.M. for all players owning the season. Within the chest, Guardians could nab themselves the Thunderlord Exotic machine gun, a Class-specific Exotic armor piece, and a whole bunch of Legendary weapons and armor. The best part? All of the gear was leveled to the Powerful cap.

Without getting too into the weeds about how players get stronger in Destiny 2, Guardian power is directly related to the gear they’re wearing. The gear level is averaged together, and it mostly makes up a player’s power level. The Powerful cap is the point where Guardians stop finding increasingly powerful gear throughout the world and must instead focus their efforts on end-game content like Raids, higher-difficulty activities, or Pinnacle pursuits. So, the Gift of the Thunder Gods allowed new or returning players to instantly get in on the current action and join any friends already in the deep end.

With the Gift of the Thunder Gods coming back for Into the Light, players will once again have an easy way to jump right into the end game. It’s unclear whether the rewards will stay the same, with the Thunderlord, Lair’s Handshake, Cuirass of the Falling Star, and Getaway Artist Exotics initially up for grabs. Either way, the boost in power and confidence will only be a boon for those looking for a way to leap into the action.
